Short CV and Research Activity

In 1985, I graduated from the University of Naples “Federico II”, summa cum laude, with a degree in Biological Sciences; in 1991, I was awarded a PhD in Cellular and Molecular Genetics by the same University. In 1992, I joined the laboratory of John Lucchesi at Emory University in Atlanta (USA), as Visiting Scientist. In 2007-2008 I worked at the CSIC in Madrid, through the program “Estancias de profesores e investigadores extranjeros de acreditata experiencia en centro de invesigationes espanoles”. Since 1989, I have been a CNR Researcher, I lead my own research group, and I have actively participated in a variety of national and international projects, both as principal investigator as well as researcher staff. Since 2009, I have also been involved in science dissemination activities for school teachers and students (CIRED project; school collaboration). Since 2011, I have been honorary fellow in Genetics at the University of Naples Federico II. Since 2011, I have been interested in the application of Quality and Project Management principles to research activity, and I am a founding member of the “qPMO network”. Since 2014, I have been a Researcher at the Institute of Biosciences and BioResources at the CNR of Naples.

Throughout my scientific career, most of my research has revolved around the use of the insect Drosophila melanogaster as model system, with a major interest on studying gene expression regulation during development and differentiation. In particular, from my early work on dosage compensation and gene regulation by the steroid hormone ecdysone, I passed to characterize sex-specific genes in both model and agricultural pest insects. At present, my research activity is focused on two main areas: a) the functional characterization of the male fertility factors in Drosophila and the molecular processes involved in sperm cell differentiation; b) the use of the genetic and transgenic tools of Drosophila melanogaster to uncover the molecular mechanisms of heterologous genes.
