DEMETRA: DEvelopment of a quick Monitoring index as a tool to assess the Environmental impact of TRAnsgenic crops

*

Project Description

The DEMETRA project, acronym of "DEvelopment of a quick Monitoring index as a tool to assess the Environmental impact of TRAnsgenic crops", has been presented in the second call for proposal of the LIFE+ European Programme (2007-2013). The project was originally promoted by the Tuscany Region with the aim of individuating a methodology for the assessment of the potential risk posed by transgenic crops in order to adopt adequate environmental monitoring strategies.

A project funded by the LIFE programme with the aim of defining an innovative methodology for the assessment of risks linked with the presence of transgenic crops. The main goal is the definition of a quick monitoring index which supports decision-makers to identify the areas where to position the environmental monitoring network at local level.

Project Activities

Project activities do not foresee the use of transgenic organisms. The project is based on a detailed analysis of the ecosystems and environmental resources present in the study area. This analysis is the starting point for the development of a risk matrix, which is linked to the use of specific Genetically Modified Organisms and is based on peer reviewed data and on ecological and biological collected parameters. In this website you can find out updates about the project activities carried on by the project team and general information about the GMOs environmental risk assessment and the study of biodiversity.
