Project acronym and title Isolation of the genetic determinants of asexual seed production (apomixis) to maximise crop productivity

Description Functional Lab - Apomixis in plants consists of asexual reproduction by seeds and therefore allows to fix complex heterozygous genotypes. If harnessed in those outcrossing crop plants which are propagated by seeds it would permit the long-term fixation of superior genotypes (i.e. F1 hybrids) allowing farmers to self sow heterotic varieties without loss of hybrid vigour due to segregation. The Ialian and Argentinean Institutions has established a long term collaborative effort on the study of apomixis in the genus Paspalum. The collaboration started on 1996 between Dr. Fulvio Pupilli, (CNR-IBBR) and Prof. Camilo Quarin (CONICET-IBONE) and, after his retirement, it is actually progressing with his collaborators Prof. Dr. Juan Pablo A. Ortiz and Prof. Silvina C. Pessino, (CONICET-IICAR). The aim of the joined research is focussed at the identification of the genetic determinants of apomixis in Paspalum in the perspctive to develop an apomixis system to be introduced into crops by appropriate technologies
