Abstract: The study of volatile isoprenoids as plant stress mitigators and as building blocks of the alphabet of chemical language among plants, microbes, fungi and insects is on the cusp of becoming a mature discipline. However, we know little about the functions of volatiles during normal plant growth, development, maintenance and senescence. The true potential of volatile isoprenoids as crop management tools can be realized if those strategies are built on foundational insights into how endogenous volatiles, semi-volatiles, free radicals and hormones interact in unstressed plants that are in no hurry to convey their internal status to other organisms
